Snow and high winds are forecast to be the most factors in the storm, and it is expected to begin hitting the Southeast Sunday night, according to CNN meteorologist Reynolds Wolf.
The National Weather Service issued a winter storm watch Saturday that stretched from eastern Texas to southern Georgia. Braces Southeast for winter storm packing snow, wind and ice
"The potential exists for a significant ice storm Sunday night," the service said of the winter storm watch, which expires Monday.
Parts of Louisiana could get up to an inch of ice, while other states in the region could get between a quarter and a half-inch of ice coating power lines, trees, bridges and roadways, Wolf said.
Snow accumulations of up to 6 inches are forecast for parts of the Southeast, before precipitation changes over to sleet as the Monday morning commute gets under way.
"Travel will deteriorate quickly Sunday afternoon with many roadways likely becoming snow covered overnight," the service said. "Travel on Monday may be very difficult at best."
Alabama's Emergency Management Agency was already warning residents as early as Friday of the weekend storm.
"It is really important for Alabama residents to take this threat of severe weather serious, freezing weather over an extended period of time has the potential to cause power outages and an interruption in communication services," Alabama EMA Director Brock Long said in a statement.
