With the sounds of construction of the new North High School in the background, Superintendent of Schools Gary Maestas opened the topping off ceremony this week.  sky scraper building

Topping off traditionally identifies the last structural beam that will be placed on top of the building.

“As you can see today, we have a building that is taking shape—not only is it taking shape, but it’s being built with a great deal of accuracy and pride in the way it’s coming together.”

And much of the credit for that was given to the Massachusetts School Building Authority.
Catherine Craven, Executive Director of the MSBA was one of many officials who spoke.

“This is going to be a beautiful state-of-the-art school. I can point out to you, the science labs are going to be right over here, the gymnasium and auditorium will be in that wing of the building," said Craven. "It’s a very exciting thing to see this dream come to life.”

The structural beam, painted white to allow folks to sign it before it was raised to the top, also held an American flag at one end and at the other a pine tree to symbolize the iron workers respect for nature.

The building is expected to open in the fall of 2012.
